What is Viagra?
Viagra is probably the most famous medical treatment for erectile dysfunction. Made by Pfizer, it comes in the form of a little blue pill that helps you gain and maintain an erection long enough for sex.
Viagra is powered by the active ingredient, Sildenafil citrate, a drug known as a PDE5 inhibitor. It works by targeting the enzyme phosphodiesterase type-5 or PDE5, which is responsible for smooth muscle contraction in the blood vessels supplying your penis. Sildenafil allows blood to flow more easily to where you need it by inhibiting this enzyme, boosting your chances of getting an erection.
It’s an incredibly effective drug, relied on by millions of men across the world. Viagra works in over 80% of men that use it.
Over the counter Viagra
Over-the-counter Viagra is known as Viagra Connect. This is the 50mg dose of Viagra that’s available from pharmacies in the UK without a prescription.
Viagra Connect works in exactly the same way as other forms of Viagra. However, as a smaller dose, it’s less likely to cause side effects than the stronger 100mg version.
Viagra alternatives
There are alternatives to Viagra available that may be preferable for some men as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. These include:
- Generic Sildenafil. It’s the active ingredient in Viagra but available as a generic medication (i.e. without the brand name). Available in 50mg and 100mg doses, it’s just as effective as the famous original.
- Cialis (Tadalafil). Cialis is a popular alternative to Viagra that has a similar effectivity and tolerability profile. The active ingredient, Tadalafil, has a longer half-life, though – meaning it stays in your system for longer. With sexual stimulation, it can support you in getting an erection for up to 36 hours.
- Vardenafil (Levitra), Avanafil, or Udenafil. There are several other PDE5 inhibitors available that work in similar ways to Tadalafil and Sildenafil. However, they’re not quite as effective. Given that every man is different, though, they might be the right option for you.
Do Viagra tablets become less effective over time?
If Viagra tablets go unused, they will over time become less effective – just like any medicine. You have about two years before Viagra exceeds its shelf life.
Sometimes, if you‘ve been taking Viagra for a long time, it can become less effective. If you’ve been using it for over five years, this becomes more likely. It can happen because of changes in your body and health.
If Viagra becomes less effective, try a different PDE5 inhibitor, such as Tadalafil.
What is the difference between Viagra and Sildenafil?
Viagra is the famous ED treatment produced by Pfizer. Sildenafil is the active medical ingredient in Viagra that does the heavy lifting. Sildenafil is also available as a generic medication – without the famous brand name.
Both Viagra and generic Sildenafil do the same thing. While Viagra is more well-known, Sildenafil is just as effective. And it comes at a fraction of the cost.
Why shouldn't I drink alcohol when taking Viagra?
When you drink alcohol with Viagra, you increase your chances of the drug’s side effects. Because Viagra encourages blood flow, it tends to lower your blood pressure. Alcohol does too, and combined, you could feel common side effects associated with low blood pressure. These can include blurred vision, chest pain (angina), and light-headedness.
While a glass of wine with Viagra is usually okay, you increase your risk of adverse effects by drinking alcohol while on the drug. And, at the very least, that can interrupt the fun.
What to expect when first taking Viagra?
When first taking Viagra, it’s important to know what to expect:
- Viagra won’t cause an erection to just happen. You still need sexual stimulation for it to work.
- Take Viagra an hour before sexual activity. This gives it time to be fully absorbed by your body — and ensures that it works at its best.
- Drinking lots of alcohol when taking Viagra will increase the risk of side effects, including light-headedness, dizziness, and chest pain.
- A heavy, high-fat meal can slow the absorption of Viagra. Eating just a light meal can keep things on schedule.
- Grapefruit can increase the risk of side effects, too.
- If you experience any serious side effects, including a painful erection (priapism) or loss of vision, talk to a healthcare provider immediately.
- Viagra does not work for every man the first time. We recommend trying Viagra on eight different occasions before trying another medication.
Is Viagra bad for your heart?
If you’re in good health, Viagra itself isn’t bad for your heart. However, if you have high blood pressure (hypertension), or a history of heart attacks or heart disease, it may not be safe to take Viagra. Pharmacists – including those at an online pharmacy – will ask you to fill in a questionnaire about your medical history before they sell you Viagra.
If you’re taking medications including nitrates, alpha-blockers, riociguat, or recreational drugs like poppers, you are not recommended to take Viagra. All can affect your blood pressure.
